Los Angeles, life as an "us" and Hashem doing his thing

Posted by Avi M on October 21, 2006

Shabbat Shalom

Okay, so I’ve been in Los Angeles for one week plus a day. To be honest I had planned to do more blogging but I guess it didn’t work out that way.

One of the reasons I am in Los Angeles for a one-month chunk is so that Tamara and I can get a snapshot of what life together on a daily basis might be like. You know to see if we are compatible in terms of lifestyle and routines. I think there are some real advantages to a long-distance relationship in terms of developing emotional, intellectual and psychological intimacy, however such relationships don’t really allow people to experience one another’s idiosyncrasies and rough spots or build on the physical intimacy aspects, thus my trip to LA and our period of extended face-to-face time. My One Minute Post on Corn & Yetzer Hara

Posted by Avi M on October 9, 2006

Corn is good I love the corn and I have decided that if the people can say “ eggs, there not just for breakfast”, well then I can say “corn its not just for supper”.

So guess what I had for breakfast, right corn in bowl.

Also I read an interesting post over at TrueAncestor looking at evil in the Jewish and Buddhist traditions. I think its worth checking out.

Be well

It’s 5767 and into the integral I g0

Posted by Avi M on October 8, 2006

Close to a year a go an acquaintance of mine who works as an ADD Coach came up with an idea that I found most intriguing. He was working with a client around setting goals and New Year’s resolutions when he came up with an approach he referred to as the Yearly Theme. The basic idea is to avoid making goals like I’m going to lose 50 pounds instead opting to create a theme for the year. So for example instead of losing weight may be a theme could be Extreme Personal Health because it’s something which can encompass multiple objectives including losing weight. It’s sort of a broad umbrella that provides flexibility but also acts as a reference point to help people stay on target with their goals or objectives for the year.

Anyhow I’ve loved the idea since I was first introduced to it and seeing how we’re going into a new year I thought why not put the old Yearly Theme into play.

5767 is what I’m aptly referring to as The Year of Integral, actually more specifically my theme is Integral Judaism because I think that they’re going to fit very well together and provide a framework for addressing my full life spectrum. However before I begin working out the nuts and bolts of my theme in this post, I should probably try to clarify the term integral a little bit, or rather as I currently understand it.   Read the rest of this entry »

Yom Kippur, Forgiveness and Farming

Posted by Avi M on October 5, 2006

This started off as a comment to a new post over at The Jewish Connection entitled “Asking for Forgiveness After Yom Kippur”. I tried posting my comment without much success, so I thought I would just turn into a post of my own here but you may want to read Chaim’s post for context.

——————————————————————

Hey Chaim

Interesting post you’ve got going here.

I’m not sure that it really matters how serious (or unserious) anyone else takes the holidays. It is also impossible to really gauge another person’s level of sincerity in terms of apologizing or making amends. More importantly I believe that it’s irrelevant, at least in terms of my own spiritual work. It’s not my job to judge other people in terms of the quality or sincerity of their attempts to make amends to me or anyone else. My job is to work on myself and to make sure that my apologies and amends are as heartfelt as possible. For me personally when it comes to making amends it’s equally if not more important to make sure that the underlying foundations are being addressed and usually with me that means understanding the nature of my wrongdoing. This is important to me because I need to be accountable to myself so that I can learn from the mistake and work towards repairing the character flaws that led to the transgression.

Reflections on the High Holidays Part Five Moving Into the New

Posted by Avi M on October 3, 2006

I was actually planning on covering something else with this post but I’ve decided to skip a few things and just try to wrap up my High Holiday stuff with this post.

As I’ve already mentioned I came into the high holidays in a very unprepared and unconnected fashion, looking back it’s clear to me that I’ve missed opportunities in several ways. For example I think I could’ve dug a little bit deeper in terms of spiritual reflection and introspection. Don’t get me wrong I certainly think that’s my strong suit and I managed to cover a fair amount of interesting ground over the last week or so. It’s just that I think with better preparation I could’ve gone into things more spiritually stable, which might have allowed me to feels smoother and deeper in terms of reflection. Having said that I suppose spiritual stuff is never smooth because if things were smooth we probably wouldn’t bother pursuing any spiritual lines of questioning. Read the rest of this entry »
